How to clean a fabric sofa at home: upholstery, stains and carpets

Updated:

To clean a fabric sofa at home, use a dry foam cleaner for textiles: apply the foam to the fabric upholstery, leave it for 5 minutes and remove it with a dry cloth, brush or vacuum cleaner — no rinsing with water. Armchairs, pouffes and carpets are cleaned the same way. The product removes most stains, and for very heavy dirt the treatment is repeated.

What you can clean with the foam at home

Dry foam is a carpet and upholstery cleaner: it removes most stains and dirt from woven upholstery, carpet and velour. The active foam lifts dirt out of the fibres and is then removed without water. Besides a fabric sofa, it cleans armchairs, pouffes and chairs with fabric upholstery, as well as carpets. After treatment the fabric becomes antistatic and dirt- and water-repellent, and a barrier against new dirt forms on the surface.

The product suits ordinary fabric upholstery — basket weave, chenille, microfibre — and velour. Test flock, Alcantara, light-coloured and patterned fabrics on an inconspicuous area first and do not rub them hard. Do not use it on genuine leather or faux leather sofas.

How to clean sofa upholstery at home — step by step

  1. Ventilate the room. Open the windows: the product is used in a well-ventilated area.
  2. Remove dust and crumbs. Clear loose dirt from the upholstery with a brush or vacuum cleaner.
  3. Test the fabric. Apply a little foam to an inconspicuous area — for example, the back or underside of a cushion — and check the result once it is dry.
  4. Apply the foam. Shake the can of NANOPROTECH Car upholstery cleaner and spread the product evenly until a thick foam forms. Treat the whole cushion or backrest from seam to seam, not just the stain, and do not soak the fabric.
  5. Wait 5 minutes. The foam soaks in and lifts dirt out of the fibres.
  6. Remove the foam. Take it off thoroughly with a dry, clean cloth, brush or vacuum cleaner; no rinsing with water.
  7. Repeat on heavy dirt. If a stain remains, let the fabric dry, apply the foam again, leave it for 5 minutes and remove it.
  8. Let the sofa dry. Do not sit on the sofa or cover it until the upholstery is completely dry: this usually takes several hours. Ventilation speeds up drying.

Why it may not work

  • The stain did not come out first time. The product removes most stains; fresh ones come out more easily than old ones. For very heavy dirt, repeat the treatment once the fabric is dry.
  • A ring is left after drying. The foam was applied only to the stain or was not fully removed. Treat the whole cushion from seam to seam and remove the foam thoroughly.
  • The foam was removed too early. The instructions give it 5 minutes to soak in before it is removed.

Safety precautions

  • The can is pressurised and the product is flammable. Do not spray it near open flames, red-hot objects or electrical appliances that are switched on.
  • Work with the windows open or in a well-ventilated room.
  • Keep the can out of direct sunlight and do not heat it above 50 °C; do not pierce or burn it, even when empty.
  • Keep the can out of the reach of children. In case of contact with the eyes, rinse with water; with the skin, wash with soap and water.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sofa be cleaned with foam?

Yes, if the upholstery is fabric. Dry foam is designed for textiles, including upholstered furniture and carpets: it removes most stains and dirt from fabric upholstery and velour, and after the dwell time the foam is removed without water — with a cloth, a brush or a vacuum cleaner. Leather and faux leather sofas are not cleaned with it.

How do I remove a stain from a sofa?

Treat the whole cushion. Shake the can, spread a thick foam from seam to seam and after 5 minutes remove it with a dry cloth, brush or vacuum cleaner. If the stain remains, repeat once the fabric is dry.

How long does a sofa take to dry after cleaning?

Usually several hours. The time depends on how damp the fabric is, the thickness of the upholstery and filling, the temperature and the ventilation. Apply the foam without excess, remove it thoroughly and keep the windows open — the sofa will dry faster.

How do I clean a carpet at home?

The same way as a sofa. Remove loose dirt with a brush or vacuum cleaner, apply the foam, leave it for 5 minutes and remove it with a dry cloth, a brush or a vacuum cleaner. The product cleans carpets and carpeting and does not need rinsing with water.

Does the foam protect upholstery from new dirt?

Yes. After treatment the fabric becomes antistatic and dirt- and water-repellent, and a protective barrier against dirt forms on the surface.
