Cold bluing fluid, 40 ml
NANOPROTECH Cold bluing fluid is a touch-up bluing solution that restores a natural black finish to damaged outer surfaces of shotgun, rifle and pistol barrels and knives without heating. It is applied in thin coats to a sanded, degreased area, rinsed off with water after 5–10 minutes and reapplied until the desired depth of colour is reached. It suits steel (except stainless), brass, copper, silver and bronze.
The 40 ml bottle is sized for spot repairs of the finish on barrels, gun parts and knives.
What the fluid is used for
- Touching up worn spots and scratches on shotgun, rifle and pistol barrels.
- Local repairs of the blued finish on other steel gun parts.
- Blackening damaged areas of knife blades. Not for kitchen knives or other items that touch food, jewellery worn on the body, wheel bolts, brake parts or other critical fasteners.
- Metal blackening of brass, copper, silver and bronze parts.
- Gun bluing at home, without heat or a trip to a workshop.
Step-by-step bluing instructions
- Make sure the gun is unloaded, put on gloves and eye protection and work in a ventilated room; shake the bottle well.
- Sand the damaged area with 1000-grit abrasive paper or an abrasive pad.
- Clean and degrease the surface thoroughly: on greasy metal the bluing comes out patchy.
- Apply a thin coat with a fine brush or cotton bud and leave it to dry for 5–10 minutes.
- Rinse the area with water, dry it and repeat until you reach the desired shade.
- Coat the treated area with gun oil and polish it.
Which metals it works on
Steel, except stainless steel, which the fluid is not designed for, as well as brass, copper, silver and bronze. Aluminium and its alloys and chrome- or nickel-plated parts are not treated with it.

What is cold bluing?
Restoring a protective and decorative dark finish on metal without heating. The fluid brings back a natural black colour on damaged outer surfaces of barrels and knives.
Does it work on stainless steel?
No. The fluid is not designed for stainless steel. Use it on ordinary steel, brass, copper, silver and bronze.
Why does the bluing come out patchy?
Because of grease on the surface: on metal that has not been degreased, the bluing turns out patchy. Before applying, sand the area with 1000-grit abrasive, clean and degrease it thoroughly, and apply the fluid in thin coats.
Do I need to treat the metal after bluing?
Yes. Rinse the treated area with water, dry it, coat it with gun oil and polish: without rinsing and an oil finish, freshly blued metal can rust.
What safety precautions are needed?
Wear gloves and eye protection and do not inhale the vapours: the fluid contains mineral acids, is toxic and causes burns. Keep the bottle locked away and out of the reach of children, and do not pour leftovers down the drain. If it gets into the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

Recommendation for use
Shake well before use. Sand the damaged area with 1000-grit sandpaper or an abrasive pad, then clean it thoroughly and degrease it with NANOPROTECH degreaser. Using a fine brush or a cotton bud, apply the fluid in a thin coat and leave it to dry for 5–10 minutes. Rinse the treated area with water and dry it.
Repeat several times until the desired depth of black is reached. Coat with NANOPROTECH Gun oil and polish.
